Painting a Bathroom
When selecting a shade for your bathroom, consider shades that exude tranquillity and serenity so you can create a haven within your home. To create a scheme that provides you with a calm retreat, use colours with warm undertones that add a comforting feel to a space.
Whether you are painting over an existing finish or creating a completely new bathroom scheme to accompany fresh furnishings, Little Greene provide durable finishes to ensure your walls remain beautiful in a space that often experiences condensation and frequent cleaning.
Here, we explore some inspiring schemes to help you plan your bathroom decorating project.
Selecting a bathroom paint colour
Soothing neutrals
Bathrooms are often smaller, functional rooms with little natural light. Selecting brighter tones or light neutrals will draw light into the room and help to create the feeling of more space.
Termed the ‘classic neutrals’, warm, refreshing tones such as ‘Rolling Fog’ and ‘Mushroom’ can be used in place of whites and greys for a restful ambience.
Single colour schemes
For a finish with immediate impact and a touch of opulence, opt for an all over colour using a deep, moody hue like ‘Lamp Black.’
The strength of the colour will provide a sophisticated scheme that can be complemented with white porcelain and high-shine accessories.
Colour highlight
Colour blocking is a simple, contemporary way to introduce colour to a small space, without it being overwhelming. Pair contrasting shades for an interesting combination and a striking finish that really frames the features of a space.
Consider experimenting with the proportions of your bathroom by painting the ceiling using a bold shade, such as 'Deep Space Blue', to draw focus to the height of the room.
Pair wallpaper and paint
Wallpaper can be used in well ventilated bathrooms to add texture and pattern. Each Little Greene wallpaper design is accompanied by three complementary paint shades, which you can find online and in our wallpaper books.
Here, the moody tree and petal damask effect floral 'Camellia - Smalt' is used to provide the illusions of a fabric and juxtaposed with marble and natural rattan accessories.

The age of Cavendish Stripe is perhaps misleading in terms of its provenance. Dated at 1965, this particular fragment emerged during restoration work at Marlborough House on Pall Mall, London, though this paper in itself was based on an original from much earlier. In our interpretation, the motif – in fact a flock – has been completely removed to leave a cleaner, more versatile stripe. Pair with Celestial Blue, a dusky variant of sky blue which provides a tranquil calm.
Stitch (c1940) is inspired by embroidered chintz cottons. The use of stippling (dot-work) was popular in embroidery and printing, particularly at a time when block printing was seen as an indication of status. In the late 19th and well into the 20th Century, ornate patterns in the home were a conspicuous symbol of wealth and associated with prosperity. The use of two print colours makes this paper especially easy to coordinate with paint colours and other elements in the room.
Camellia is a moody tree and petal damask effect floral on a silken background. Create a co-ordinated scheme with the bold and beautiful Smalt.
Created through the simplification and reduction of the larger ‘Woodblock Trail’ paper, 'Woodblock Mono' represents the trend throughout the ages for varying the scales of designs to create different visual effects. Rather more delicate, and infinitely usable in a smaller space, this monochrome version is available in five colourways.
